In 1997 I heard a woman named Marta Gabre-Tsadick speak about her experiences as an Ethiopian refugee. Marta, who had been the first woman Ethiopian senator under Haile Selassie, had fled in danger with her family to escape the communists. I immediately loved this woman as I heard her story and her vision for a 52 acre area called Yetebon at the foot of a volcanic mountain ridge.
I began sending money to the school Marta and her husband, Deme
founded. Then I learned more. There were plans for a hospital,
irrigation for crops, a cattle breeding program and an educational
program for women which teaches hygiene, simple first aid and skills
for trades. I wanted to do more. What could I give? My husband and I gave two weeks of our time in November
2000 and again in October of 2005, during which we taught music and English
to five classrooms of eager, smiling children's faces. (Each classroom
numbered 85 - 100 children! ) We are giving all the profits from our CD to
help build anot
In making this 17 hour plane trip we discovered a quiet place, untouched by TV, radio, telephones and computers. A quiet place where love and sharing are more important than money and fashion. Listen to the lyrics of "A Quiet Place". They are Yetebon! In fact, all of the songs on this CD turned out to be a fitting description of our experiences in Yetebon! All Profits from “A Quiet Place” CD go to a school in Yetebon, Ethiopia
